HERE’S A FACT OF LIFE:  AT SOME POINT OR ANOTHER, EVERY SENSITIVE SOUL HITS TOTAL EMOTIONAL OVERWHELM!

 
The story usually sounds a little bit like this:
 
You’re bustling through your busy life ….  You know that you’re deeply sensitive, so you maneuver through life a bit more carefully than others. 
You’re thoughtful, introspective and you care deeply about the impact you have on the people around you.  You’re choosey about who you hang out with and how you spend your time.  You do yoga and meditate from time to time.  You rock out on self-help books, and life is basically good.
 
But one day you begin to notice that you’re feeling more sensitive…. your emotions are getting bigger and your days more overwhelming. 
Your normal amount of self-care (that already felt extravagant compared to most people) doesn’t seem to be cutting it anymore
Your fuse is shorter, your relationships are draining you and some days you just want to lie on the bathroom floor and ignore the outside world!  It’s all too much!
 

You feel worried …. what if this emotional overwhelm and anxiety get bigger!?  You’re barely making it through your days as it is!

 
And, you’re wondering why …. why are you so sensitive?!  And why does life seem to be getting harder?!
 
I know why, because I’ve been there!  (And so have all of my clients)!
 

Your (super sensitive) emotions are always trying to guide you to more peace, love and joy!

But, if you don’t know how to listen to their wise and loving guidance … things begin to spiral out of control!

 
And the longer you go without understanding and taking care of the messages from your emotions… the louder they get You can’t run and you can’t hide from your emotions – and trying to numb or suppress them will take about every ounce of energy that you’ve got.

Where it all begins ….

 
Most of us don’t understand how to deal with our negative feelings, because we haven’t been taught self-compassion or emotional awareness. In fact, we’ve been taught exactly the opposite!
 
When we were kids, it is likely that we felt rejected, judged or even shamed for having feelings. When this happens, we learn to disconnect from our true feelings, needs and desires.
 
We learn coping mechanisms that involve repressing, ignoring, misunderstanding and becoming numb to our negative feelings.
 

AND, UNFORTUNATELY, THESE HABITS DISCONNECT US FROM OUR OWN TRUTH!

THEY CREATE ANXIETY, DEPRESSION, EXHAUSTION AND OVERWHELM …. AND THESE HABITS CREATE A CONFUSING BATTLE WITHIN US. 

 
If you want to increase your self-love and find inner peace, you need to have a healthy way of relating to your big emotions.  This step-by-step guide to emotional healing will help you do exactly that!
 
So, what can we do to reclaim our wisdom and befriend our emotions?
 
(Fortunately, it’s not too complicated! )

STEP 1:  Give voice to your feelings

 

A HUGE REASON THAT WE ARE AT WAR WITH OUR EMOTIONS IS that WE OFTEN DENY THAT WE ARE EVEN HAVING THEM! 

 
As a child were you punished for having anger?  Shamed for feeling afraid?  Or maybe someone close to you let their emotions run wild and you vowed that you never wanted to be like them ….
 
For lots of good reasons, during our childhood, we learn to logically explain to ourselves why we “shouldn’t” be having the feelings we are having.
 
We tell ourselves things like “deal with it,” and “keep it together” …. all while judging ourselves for the entirely unavoidable human experience of having emotions! 
 

NOW WE FEEL BAD FOR FEELING BAD – WHICH IS SUCH A PAINFUL CYCLE! 

 

ALL OF THIS LEAVES US EXHAUSTED, CONFUSED AND MOODY!

 
So, the first imperative is to allow our true emotions to have a voice!
 
To do this, grab the free workbook (or just grab your journal) and follow along!
 
Think of something in your life that is bothering you (or that you feel stuck or confused about). Then complete these sentences as honestly and freely as possible:
 
See how much you can allow yourself to write without editing or judging your words at all!  Don’t worry about sounding “appropriate” or “enlightened”!  Just let it flow! 
 
·      I’m feeling ….
 
·      I’m feeling this way because ….
 
·      This situation sucks because ….
 
·      I’m so frustrated because deep down ….
 
·      But I’m not supposed to ….
 
·      I’m expected to …..
 
·      I just want to scream because ….
 
·      What I’m really afraid of is …..
 
·      It makes me sad that ….
 
·      If this were an ideal world ….
 
·      I’m feeling vulnerable because …..
 
·      This situation reminds me of …..
 
Good!  Now that you’ve restored flow to your emotions and you’ve allowed yourself to be honest, how do you feel?  What insights and “a-ha’s” have you received from this journaling?  How are your emotions trying to guide you in this scenario?
 
Once you can let your emotions flow, you can begin to be honest with yourself more and more – and this will benefit you in every area of your life! You will no longer have to run and hide from your negative feelings … Instead, you can tune in to their wisdom and let them guide you towards greater peace.
 
Now, let’s work on how to be a compassionate presence for yourself so that you can actually heal these emotions!

STEP 2:  Offer yourself understanding

 
It’s no good to start the flow of honesty and then immediately repress your emotions again by judging yourself! … But that’s exactly what we often do!
 
So, instead of judging or belittling yourself, grab the free workbook and complete these sentences:
 
·      Of course I feel this way because ….
 
·      It makes total sense that I’m reacting this way because ….
 
·      If one of my friends were feeling this way, I would totally understand because ….
 
·      I know that I’m doing my best because ….
 
·      It’s okay for me to feel this way because …
 

OUR MANTRA FOR STEP 2 IS:  “OF COURSE I FEEL THIS WAY!  IT MAKES SENSE THAT I FEEL THIS WAY!  IT’S OKAY FOR ME TO FEEL THIS WAY!”

 
Meeting your negative feelings with understanding is a huge key to emotional healing! It decreases your levels of inner conflict, anxiety and confusion … And it helps you have more compassion for yourself!
 
So much of our energy every day is drained by resisting and denying this very human part of ourselves.  Offering yourself understanding is a great way to stop the vicious cycle!
 
These 2 steps alone will get you massive progress towards self-understanding and compassion!  But let’s take it one step further to dive even more deeply into emotional healing …

STEP 3:  Meditate for emotional healing

No matter what emotions are swirling through your body today or what thoughts are racing through your mind … It is still possible to have peace in your heart!
